About Me...
Dr Clare Tower MBChB PhD FRCOG
Hi, I’m Clare. I’m a Consultant in Obstetrics and Fetal & Maternal Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester, and I’ve spent my career supporting women and families through some of the most important moments of their lives. My training took me through Leeds, Nottingham, London and Manchester, and I went on to complete a PhD with a Wellcome Trust Fellowship. Along the way, I’ve contributed to national guidelines, committees, obstetric textbooks, and the Ockenden Maternity Review in 2022. I’ve also held leadership roles at St Mary’s and the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, but at the heart of it all my focus is simple: helping women feel supported, understood and empowered during pregnancy and beyond.
In March 2021, while COVID restrictions were still in place, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The treatment and recovery that followed were incredibly challenging, and left me with PTSD, an experience that opened my eyes to just how misunderstood trauma can be in healthcare. It has deepened my commitment to bringing compassion, clarity and a truly holistic approach to the way we care for women, and also how we support the staff that provide that care.
I’m especially passionate about making pregnancy information clear and accessible. Too often, the NHS only has time to share the leaflet and QR codes (to leaflets), leaving expectant parents unsure about why certain tests are needed or which supplements really matter, or what to expect in labour. Through blogs, videos and resources, I want to bridge that gap, helping both medical professionals and parents-to-be understand more about pregnancy, and ultimately making pregnancy safer for everyone.
